For most users high-level data analysis still remains a mystery, the majority cannot imagine how much effort is made to support those complicated systems processing millions and even billions of user requests per day. The modern Internet giants like Facebook, LinkedIn and Netflix work with Big Data. Thus huge loads of incoming information get processed and result into complex analytics, related content topics and other individualized pieces of valuable information. The one-year-old startup known as Confluent promises to be a guide to the future of Big Data and offers instruments for stream data processing.
Several years ago a group of LinkedIn employees developed a data processing system Apache Kafka and released their code to the target community in order to cooperate in open code engineering. Later Kafka became a popularly applied instrument downloaded by numerous companies for data processing. Last year three employees from LinkedIn came up with an idea to develop instruments and services that would make work with Kafka software easier and sell these components to the system users. Jun Rao, Jay Kreps and Neha Narkhede managed to persuade LinkedIn chief managers in the high potential of their business idea, who later invested in Confluent.
Why has Big Data become such an essential part of the progressive industries today? Because we live in the era of information which is considered to be a new factor of production. Every year systems have to process more and more information, big data packages are processed for hours! Confluent software makes this operation more productive and less time-consuming. The solution is associated with stream data processing under which a new data request can be directed to the center of the relevant data stream and thus processed in real time.
Jun Rao, Jay Kreps and Neha Narkhede are proud to work on this perspective direction. For now they have 50 000 downloads of Confluent Kafka package per month, although the revenues are not really impressive. In the nearest future, they plan to add some new features to their products that would improve security and facilitate work with the software reference materials. Recently Confluent project received $24 mln funding from Index Ventures and Benchmark. The current team of 3 founders and 17 employees will soon move to a new office, where they will hire more developers to deal with Confluent. As you see, this startup project gains power; the guys even intend to make a big presentation about stream data processing in October in a hope of spreading the new Big Data technology among smaller companies outside the high-tech field.
